  Principles of Ma'at
I created the four winds so that every person might breathe in his or her time and place
This is one of the deeds

I created the great flood for irrigation so that the humble might benefit from it like the great
I made every person like his and her fellow; and I did not command them to do evil. It was their own hearts and minds which caused them to disobey that which I commanded. This too is one of the deeds

I made the hearts of men and women so that they would not forget the day of death, so that sacred offerings might be made to the divine powers. And this too is one of the deeds

Thus I have created divine powers from my sweat and humankind from the tears of my eye

From "The Book of Knowing The Creations of Ra," Maulana Karenga Translation

Ethics has to do with life lived in a community. It is not about rules externally imposed on people or groups of people to keep order (that is called morality).

The Ancient Egyptians experienced community as including both the seen and unseen worlds. The community with which Kemetic ethics is concerned includes all of Creation, our ancestors, other beings, humans, and the Netjer. Even with the best of intentions, keeping in right relationship to all these powers/forces would be beyond any system of laws or rules humankind could imagine.

Dua Netjer (Thank God/s) that at the time of Creation, we were blessed by Netjer with four great deeds (as described above), so that the possibility of a good life and our participation in creating a just world is open to each of us.

Indeed at the time Creation, the Zep Tepi (or First Time), the Creator set into motion Ma'at to ensure the ultimate victory of good over evil. All humans have Ma'at in their hearts; they can recognize and breath Ma'at from within all of Creation; they can offer Ma'at to their ancestors and to the Netjer... and, in return, they can receive Ma'at in their lives and be their very best.

To be who we truly are is to live in harmony with the Universe. We are, after all, created from the Tears of Ra!

  • Ma'at is a force which orders both nature and society and attempts to bring all things back into right relationship to one another
  • Ma'at can manifest as a Netjer (see the Glossary of Names)
  • Achieving Ma'at is both the goal of ethics and the process by which it is reached.

Netjer reaches out to us in Love....
We respond in love and worship by offering our lives to Netjer by striving to understand and contribute to recreating that perfect ordering of the First Time (Zep Tepi)

Soon there will be specific reflection on Ma'at in the modern world on this web site.
